Let's first start with what hyperpigmentation means. "Hyper" means more and "pigment" means color. So, hyperpigmentation means more color and sometimes these spots on skin are also called age spots or sun spots. They are not itchy or painful but can cause people to be self-conscious. And they can affect people of any race, ethnicity, gender, or age.

Hyperpigmentation can happen for a number of reasons. A common one is sun damage and sun damage can be avoided by wearing SPF (all the time!), staying out of the sun, and wearing protective clothing. Another common source of hyperpigmentation is from acne or scars. These can leave postinflammatory hyperpigmentation on your skin. Hormone changes can also cause pigmentation changes, amongst other causes.

Our two biggest treatments for hyperpigmentation are IPL and chemical peels. IPL treats hyperpigmentation by using broad-spectrum light to break down the excess pigment in your skin. Your body will then naturally flush out the broken down pigment. This helps hyperpigmentation (such as age spots, sun spots, and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation) fade over time. We always suggest at least 3 sessions and more may be needed for optimal results.

Another treatment option is chemical peels. We have a variety of chemical peels, which differ mainly by their strength and goal. Our clients' favorite peel for pigmentation treatment is Skinceutical's TCA peel. We also have a pigment balancing peel which is great for treating hyperpigmentation.
